In the early 2010s, the University of Lyon launched the project Lyon Cité Campus to renovate and expand its  campuses. The sites concerned included the Monod campus, which is home to the Lyon branch of the École Normale Supérieure (ENS), a prestigious school of science and literature.

A major challenge

Taking advantage of the refurbishment of research buildings, with the creation of a laboratory on formerly disused premises, the plan was to initiate the energy renovation of almost 50,000 m2 of building space. The work was part of a public-private partnership (PPP) in which Idex joined the Neolys consortium, led by Demathieu Bard. The project involved almost three years of work on an occupied site, from January 2017 to September 2019.

  • Tasks conducted by our construction teams:

    • Facade renovation
    • Replacement of hygienic air handling units
    • Improved building control
    • Upgrades to the make-up air units in laboratories
    • Hydraulic system refurbishment
    • Repairs to roof waterproofing
    • Replacement of the fire safety system
    • Compliance with disability requirements
    • Replacement of door and window frames
    • Replacement of the IT network

An ecological and cost-effective investment

Overall, over 15% of the renovation budget was used to renovate the HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) systems and install a centralised building management system to optimise control of the on-site facilities, which will be managed by Idex through to 2044. The work carried out on the 50,000m² making up the ten buildings of the Monod campus will allow us to meet our commitment of delivering energy savings of  30% while avoiding the emission of 14,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.
