Idex says no to illegal hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs)
The Group has joined forces with the European FluoroCarbon Technical Committee (EFCTC), signing up for its Stop Illegal Cooling campaign aimed at eradicating the black market for hydrofluorocarbons.
Large amounts of these refrigerant gases are smuggled into Europe every year, entailing emissions amounting to up to 34 million of tonnes of CO2 equivalent or 33% of the European market’s quota.
As a point of comparison, this illegal trade equates to adding 25 million cars to Europe’s roads – which is roughly the number of cars in Spain today.
Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), which are used as refrigerants, are gradually being phased out and replaced by alternatives with a lower global warming potential (GWP) such as ammonia, CO2, hydrocarbons (isobutane, propane, etc.) or hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs).
Available stocks of these high-GWP gases have declined by 55% since 2015 and the target is 79% by 2030.
To push back against illegal HFC trading, Idex ensures its customers’ facilities are compliant by making sure its own refrigerant supply chains are compliant. To do this, it has for instance signed framework agreements with its refrigerant suppliers GFF, Delclim, Rolesco and Clim+.
Now it has taken one step further, alongside the 300 other companies that have signed up for the EFCTC’s Stop Illegal Cooling campaign!
