Job profile: Emilie Charlassier, Operations Manager
In this new series, we tell you about a few of the jobs at Idex. Today, Emilie Charlassier speaks about her job as Operations Manager.
Tell us about your job.
I’m Operations Manager. I make sure our services match our client’s requirements while managing the team that provides them. I also allocate resources, am the client’s go-to person and manage the budget. The unusual thing about my job is that I work full-time for one client, La Poste (covering their mail and parcel divisions). It has 140 bases and I have 13 technicians on my team.
What gets you up in the morning?
Knowing that we will figure out how to solve any issues my client has that day.
What does a typical day at work look like?
No two days are alike – and there are lots of surprises! Most of my job involves management: managing schedules, managing teams, talking to team leaders about the problems they are dealing with. I also have a support role – tracking orders, quotations and service providers, monitoring regulation and supervising safety. Another big part of my job is liaising with clients and making sure we respond to their requests efficiently and effectively.
What do you like about working at Idex?
It’s a human-sized company, there’s a strong team spirit and I have a certain amount of freedom in my job. I can make suggestions in my scope. I was looking for a job where I could use my entrepreneurial spirit and that’s exactly what I found here. I don’t have the usual Ops Manager profile.
I’m a woman and I’m more of a manager than a technical expert. But there’s always someone I go to for help. I see being a woman in a man’s job as a strength! I feel people listen more.
What’s your favourite time during the day?
Morning coffee with my coworkers, with the team. That’s when the day really starts!
What advice would you give new employees?
Listen a lot and soak up the company’s culture. For example, take your time to watch your coworkers. I felt very welcome at Idex. Everyone was happy to lend advice and took an interest.
A fun story?
One of the technicians on my team is especially meticulous about safety. He never takes off his hard hat. One day, he was rummaging through this toolbox, his hard hat fell off, he picked it up and then he bumped his head when he was standing back up. I use that story to remind people that it’s important to stay alert absolutely all the time!
