Bordeaux Métropole selects the Idex-Mixéner consortium to renovate and extend its Hauts de Garonne district heating network
The project is backed by an innovative crowdlending campaign that will provide €300k in financing.
Today, 77% of the energy used in the long-established Hauts de Garonne district heating network comes from renewable and recovered energy sources, providing heat to 11,500 equivalent housing units in Cenon, Lormont and Floirac.
Tomorrow, modernisation and refurbishment work and use of the latest technologies will allow a further 2,800 equivalent housing units to be connected to the network.
Work on the upgrades will start in early 2021 and are scheduled to last 5 years, boosting energy performance in the existing network and delivering a 30% increase in renewable heating energy.
Ambitious development plans
To provide heat to an extra 2,800 equivalent housing units from primarily green energy sources, Bordeaux Métropole has chosen to extend its network by 6.7 kilometres, with 47 new substations. This expansion means demand for heating is set to rise by 28 GWh, with subscribed power rising to 16.4 MW.

We are proud to be selected by Bordeaux Métropole to join this project to overhaul and expand the Hauts de Garonne district heating network. With a 7-year delegated public service contract awarded to the Idex-Mixéner consortium, the project forms a component of the ambitious climate-air-energy policy that Bordeaux Métropole has followed in recent years. Elsewhere in Bordeaux, Idex is also involved in the operation of the Bassins à Flots and Saint-Jean Belcier district heating networks.
