Idex accelerates the energy transition in Bussy Saint Georges with a virtuous heating network
Bussy‑Saint‑Georges took a huge step toward a low-carbon energy future when the Idex Group opened the town’s new biomass heating plant on Tuesday, 26 September. The event was held in the presence of Jean‑Paul Michel, Chairman of the Marne and Gondoire local authority and Mayor of Lagny‑sur‑Marne. This biomass heat production facility has been in service for a year, currently supplying heat to 2,300 homes in the Sycomore eco-district.
By 2028, more than 6,000 households will have been connected to the heating network, significantly shrinking the region’s carbon footprint. This transition toward low-carbon energy has been made possible thanks to a new biomass heat production facility and local, renewable, low-carbon consumption, which will eliminate 8,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions a year.
In an effort to improve its residents’ quality of life, the local authority, CAMG, and the town of Bussy‑Saint‑Georges opted for a biomass heating network to heat the Sycomore eco-district.
This novel project began in 2013 when the town of Bussy‑Saint‑Georges and CAMG appointed Idex to create and operate a wood-fired heating network in the Bussy‑Saint‑Georges area for an initial 24-year period. Bussycomore Energie, a 100% Idex-owned subsidiary, is gradually rolling out its heating network as the district grows and will eventually be supplying 6,240 homes, as well as public facilities such as schools, gyms, and the future aquatic centre.
As the eco-district expands, Idex plans to increase the proportion of renewable energies in the network’s energy mix from 70% to 80%, with the remaining 20% being the gas required to operate the infrastructure. The network will also be extended from 7 km to 12.4 km in length in order to harness residual heat from the waste-to-energy plant in Saint-Thibault-Des-Vignes via an interconnector.
This network, which is exemplary in terms of energy use, was made possible thanks to financial support from the Heat Fund operated by the Île-de-France region and ADEME. This initiative illustrates Idex’s commitment to the energy transition and to reducing carbon emissions while improving quality of life for local communities.
