Idex supports LIS by Lesaffre in increasing its share of renewables in the energy mix of its drying plant in Cérences in the north of France.

Leveraging complementary strengths

LIS by Lesaffre, the drying subsidiary of Lesaffre, is committed to reducing the carbon emissions of industrial production with the help of Idex, specialized in energy and environmental services. This partnership combines expertise to control steam production costs and reduce the site’s dependence on fossil fuels.

Idex is responsible for providing all of the decarbonised steam and guarantees local supply of biomass from its Granville branch. Idex will cover the design, construction, financing, operation and maintenance of the steam plant for 15 years.

Reduce CO2 emissions by 85%

By decarbonising the drying process, many LIS customers will benefit from a wide array of drying technologies whose carbon emissions have been reduced by 85%. The new wood and gas boiler will produce over 110,000 metric tons of steam a year. The construction of the biomass boiler plant will create direct jobs (two full-time equivalents) and indirect jobs, mainly related to wood procurement and mechanical maintenance.

Its operation will require nearly five 90 cubic meter semi-trailer trucks of wood per day. Wood supply will mainly be in the form of wood chips, supplemented, for about 30%, with end-of-life wood packaging.

Construction of a biomass and gas boiler room with a capacity of 37 t/h

To meet the plant’s steam needs, which average around 13 metric tons per hour, Idex will install a biomass boiler. As the plant’s process does not tolerate any defects or interruptions in supply, Idex designed a boiler room that also operates with two gas boilers to supplement and back up the biomass boiler, and therefore guarantee 100% availability. The boiler room’s total installed capacity will be 37 metric tons per hour. The long-term investment project benefits from the ADEME support fund as part of the French government’s France Relance recovery plan and the BCIAT (Biomass Heat Industry Agriculture and Tertiary) program, which covers 34% of the total investment.
