Clermont-Ferrand: the Clauvaé district heating network comes online
Today marked a major milestone in the energy transition of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alps region, with the inauguration of the new Clauvaé district heating network, south of Clermont-Ferrand.
A sustainable solution making the energy transition a reality for the urban community
The inaugural event was attended by key players including Olivier Bianchi, President of the Clermont Auvergne Urban Community and Mayor of Clermont-Ferrand, Benjamin Fremaux, CEO of Idex, and other local and regional representatives.
The Clauvaé heating network is part of a broader approach implemented by the urban community to develop renewable energies by reducing its dependence on fossil fuels and encouraging the use of more sustainable energy sources. By late 2024, the network had a total length of 33 kilometers, delivering a more efficient and ecological heating solution for a greater number of residents across the region.

Work began in November 2022. It involved building almost 20 km of pipelines and installing an exchanger to recover the heat produced by the waste-to-energy plant at the Vernéa household waste recovery centre.
This infrastructure will provide heating and domestic hot water for over 10,000 equivalent dwelling units in the surrounding area, helping to reduce CO2 emissions by over 14,000 tonnes a year.
