The Béthune-Bruay local authority (CABBALR) has awarded Idex the public services concession to design, finance, build, and operate a plant to generate energy from household and similar waste in Labeuvrière. The more efficient new facility will become a multi-energy hub, replacing the current waste-to-energy plant and offering increased capacity for energy recovery from different types of waste.

With capacity to treat 100,000 tonnes of waste annually – three-quarters of which will come from CABBALR – the new waste-to-energy centre has been designed to last for 40 years and includes two separate treatment lines.

The choice of technologies, including the furnace, will allow energy recovery from a wider range of waste types and ensure 98% uptime for the facility, which will supply:

  • 41 GWh of steam per year to the manufacturer Croda.
  • 56 GWh of heat per year to the Béthune urban heating network.
  • 40 GWh of electricity per year to the local grid.

Construction of the installation will begin in January 2025 once the necessary permits have been issued, with commissioning due in April 2027. Following the four years of construction, the contract also covers a 20-year operating period.

We selected Idex because their bid aligns with our environmental transition ambitions and will ensure the treatment and recovery of our community’s waste for years to come. This innovative and forward-looking regional asset will establish us as a producer and distributor of clean, local energy. It aptly demonstrates the growing power of the circular economy and our ambition to be a 100% sustainable authority.
